Effective March 1, 2020
The National Network to End Domestic Violence (“NNEDV”) is committed to protecting your privacy. We believe that privacy is a critical part of survivor safety. We designed this Application (App) to let you control the personal information you collect or store in the app, and who you share that information with. The App is designed so that NNEDV cannot access your personal information, and we will not collect or store personal information about you.
The purpose of this privacy policy (“Policy”) is to explain what information we collect through this App, how it is used, and your options so that you can make an informed choice about if and how you use the App. By visiting or using the App, you agree to the provisions of this Policy. If you do not agree, you may choose not to visit or use the App.
What is Personal Information?
Personal Information
For us, "personal information" means information that identifies you, like your name or email address, phone number, IP address, or any other information that could be identifying. NNEDV does NOT collect personal information from you based on your use of the App.
Non-Personal and Aggregate Information
Non-personal information does not personally identify you but might include the make and model of your device, or the version of the operating system on your device. Aggregate data is a combination of data about many people that doesn’t identify you specifically. Examples of the non-personal or aggregate information we use include the number of downloads of the App by all users or information about devices or operating systems experiencing a problem when the App quits unexpectedly.
What Information Do We Collect?
When you download the App and updates from an App Store
When you download this App, the App Store (Google Play Store or Apple App Store) will collect and store information about you and connect it to the account you used to download the App. See their Privacy Policies for more information. NNEDV does not request or receive any personal information about you from the
App Store. We do receive non-personal information that includes app store, app version, country, device brand, device category, device model, first open time (the time at which a user first opened the app), language, and operating system.
When you first sign-in and connect to a cloud account
When you first open the App, you will be asked to connect the App to a cloud account where your documentation will be encrypted and stored. NNEDV will not access any of the contents of your cloud account, and the App will not access other contents of your cloud account beyond files saved there by the App itself.
When you grant the App access to camera and microphone
When you begin using the App, you may be asked to give permission to access your camera and/or microphone. This access allows you to upload documentation through the App to an encrypted file in your cloud account. NNEDV will not use this permission to access anything on your device at any time.
When you share your documentation
If you choose to share your documentation with someone else through the App, you will be sharing sensitive personal information, including details about any abuse you have experienced. The documentation will be encrypted, meaning it cannot be read without a key to unlock the encrypted message. The person you share the information with will receive a link via email. When you share a separate unlock code with them by email or message, they will then have access to the documentation file(s) stored in your cloud account. NNEDV will not have access to the content of these messages, or to the documentation, you are sharing.
When you link to visit our websites or contact us
The App is managed by NNEDV. There are several links to resources located outside the App, such as those on our websites, which you would access through a separate browser app. You will also be offered a link to contact us, which you would access through an email app. If you use links within the App to access our websites or contact us, please see the Privacy Policy that pertains to each site.
When you link to other sites
The App offers links to third-party websites. NNEDV is not responsible for, and does not have any control over, the privacy practices or the content of such third parties. Please be aware that when you enter a third-party website, any information you provide is subject to the terms of use and privacy policy of that third-party website. We encourage you to read their privacy policies for information about how they collect, use, and share your data when you visit those websites. The fact that we link other websites within this app is not an endorsement, authorization, or representation of an affiliation with that third party, nor is it an endorsement of that third party’s privacy or information security policies or practices.
Log Data: Google Firebase (Analytics) and Cookies
We use Google’s Firebase platform to measure and analyze the use of our App, so some information about your usage could be shared with Google. We may share aggregate trends and data from Google outside of NNEDV; however, none of this information will be individualized nor will it be combined or cross-referenced with any other information or data.
When you use the App, certain information and analytical data are automatically collected related to your use of the App through a platform called Firebase from Google. Firebase collects anonymous information such as users’ IP addresses (which may contain location information), how often the App is accessed, what sections users access when they do so, and performance data including anonymous crash reports.
NNEDV will use this information to monitor and analyze use of the App and to know which sections are most often accessed, to increase the App’s functionality and user-friendliness, to better tailor it to user needs, and for the App’s technical administration. Log data information or any information that we access through Firebase will not be compared, associated, or combined with personal information you share with us; however, log data, such as IP address, by itself, may be personally identifiable information.
Although Firebase plants a persistent cookie to identify you as a unique user, the cookie cannot be used by anyone but Google (not by NNEDV). Google's ability to use and share information collected by Firebase about your use of the App is restricted by Google’s Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. NNEDV’s Privacy Policy does not cover the use of cookies or tracking technologies by Google or any other business partner. Google Analytics makes its own policies regarding confidentiality and information usage and sharing of IP addresses that it logs. To read the privacy policy of Firebase, please go to their website here: www.google.com/intl/en/policies/privacy/
NNEDV will share some aggregate information, such as those statistics gathered through Firebase, with third parties for industry analysis, grant-reporting, and other purposes. However, we will not have access to any identifying information.

We do use non-personal information to improve this App, and we use aggregate data to report to funders, members, and the public.
If you share personal information with us when you contact us for support or assistance outside of the App, NNEDV will use that information to communicate with you. If you visit our websites, we will use non-personal information to improve the sites. Please see the privacy policies covering our websites, www.TechSafety.org, www.WomensLaw.org, and www.NNEDV.org.
When Do We Share Your Information with Others?
NNEDV does not have access to information you store or share through the App, and we do not collect personal information about you through the App.
NNEDV does not sell or rent any information about you to anyone under any circumstances.
We do share non-personal information and aggregate information with third-parties to improve this App, and to funders, members, and the public, for example by to report the number of downloads of the App.
If you share personal information with us when you contact us for support or assistance outside of the App, NNEDV will not disclose that personal information to any person or entity for any reason without your written, time-limited, informed consent, unless NNEDV is compelled to provide it as explained within the Privacy Policies for the above sites.
What Do We Do to Protect the App and Your Information?
The evidence files and information you add within the App are encrypted with multiple layers of security, that use your Apple or Google sign-in credentials in addition to the Pin Code you enter. Your credentials enable your encrypted files to be backed up to your iCloud or Google Drive account respectively. This information cannot be accessed by NNEDV, and can only be decrypted again with the same credentials and Pin Code you set up. If you share your information using the Secure Sharing feature in the App, the selected files are encrypted again using a combination of a private URL path and a separately shared unlock key. The encrypted files are stored on Amazon AWS in private Blog storage and can only be decrypted using the private URL path and this unlock key. NNEDV does not have access to this unlock key.
We do not collect or store personal information about you, including contact information. Any personal information collected or stored by the App Store or any third-party organizations you choose to link to through the App is subject to the data breach policies of those organizations.
Policy Changes
If anything changes, we’ll let you know here!
Unless stated otherwise, our current policy applies to each way that you may use the App. If the features of the App change in any way that would impact the collection of the user’s personal information, this privacy policy will be updated.
