Hi, this is Kaofeng Lee with the National Network to End Domestic Violence, and today I’m going to show you how to take a screenshot. Taking a screenshot on your computer or your cell phone is important if you want to preserve evidence of harassment or abuse. Now there’s quite a few ways to do this. You can use software such as Snagit or a clipping tool, but I’m going to show you the easiest way to do this with just your computer and a keyboard.
Say I want to take a screenshot of this image. What I’ll need to do is pull up this image on my computer. Since I’m using a PC computer, I will want to hit the PRINT SCREEN button, on my keyboard. Depending on your keyboard layout, your print screen button may be in a slightly different place. Now if I was using a Mac computer, my keyboard won’t have a PRINT Screen button. Instead, I would need to hit the Command, Shift, and the number 3 key all at the same time.
Ok, so now I’ve taken my screenshot, but now I need to save the picture somewhere. So what I’ll do is I’ll open Microsoft Word and I will paste the screenshot that I just took into this document. Another way that you can paste your screenshot is to hit the Control and V key on your keyboard at the same time. And that’s it! It’s super simple.
Now you want to make sure you save it, so one option is to save the document onto your computer. If you’re worried that someone else will have access to that document, you can save it on a flash drive and remove your flash drive from the computer. Just make sure you keep your flash drive somewhere safe.
Now, so what if I want to take a screenshot of my phone? I’m going to show you how to do it on my iPhone 4s. On my iPhone, all I need to do is hold the on/off button at the top and the home button at the same time. Do you hear the shutter and see the flash on the screen? That means that the screenshot was taken. Now, unlike my computer where I had to paste the screenshot into a word document, on my iPhone, my screenshot is automatically saved into my camera roll. I can open my camera roll and see the screenshot that I just took. Now I can either leave it there or email the picture to myself or to a friend for safe keeping.
If you have an android device, it’s pretty similar. This is a Samsung Galaxy S4, and there are a few ways to take a screenshot on this device. One of the ways is to hold the standby button on the side and the home button at the same time. Do you see the flash around the perimeter of the screen? That’s your screenshot. Your screenshot will automatically be saved into your photo gallery, where you can access it.
If you have a different type of android device, how you take the screenshot might be slightly different. For most phones, you’ll need to hold the down volume button on the side and the on/off button at the same time.
So that’s it! Now you know how to take a screenshot on your computer and on your cell phone. For more information on documentation or technology safety plans or tips, visit us at techsafety.org/resources. Thanks for watching and see you next time.
